Kingsbridge is a vibrant local market town nestled into the rolling hills of the South Hams - a sheltered rural area lying between the River Tamar in the west and the River Dart to the east.
The modern town of Kingsbridge is actually made up of two medieval towns, Kingsbridge and Dodbrooke, originally a quarter of a mile apart. Kingsbridge and the lands around it passed into the possession of the Abbots of Buckfast Abbey some time after the Norman Conquest. The Abbot of Buckfast was granted the right to hold a market in Kingsbridge in 1219, his monks selling their produce of honey, fruit, vegetables and thick cream, and so began the tradition of Kingsbridge as a market town, which continues to this day.
There is nothing sleepy about Kingsbridge - it is the centre of attention and focus for locals and visitors alike. There is a wide range of individual shops and businesses, a sports centre with indoor heated swimming pool and bowls rink, a cinema, nightclub and all the usual facilities required by a thriving, friendly community.
The area around the town, indeed the whole of the South Hams, boasts extraordinarily beautiful countryside dotted with pretty little villages and hamlets. An extensive network of footpaths, bridle-ways and country lanes allows the outdoor enthusiast, nature-lover, walker and cyclist access to the countryside. The South West Coast Path runs along the Heritage Coast of the South Hams through mainly National Trust owned land and provides many miles of excellent walking with stunning scenery.
For those who love culture, there are art galleries and exhibitions; craft markets; open air theatre and amateur theatrical shows; live music – open air concerts on the band stand, choral concerts, barbershop, folk and popular artistes in many of the pubs. Not forgetting the professional theatres in Torbay, Plymouth and Exeter.
Wildlife – in the estuary and and just out to sea, porpoises, dolphins and whales can often be seen, while unusually in October 2004 our very own seal pup was born in Hope Cove. The area is rich in birdlife including cirl bunting, egrets, peregrines, sparrowhawks and buzzards.
The South Hams, which enjoys one of the mildest climates in Britain, has some of the lowest rates of recorded crime in the country and is recognised as one of the safest places to live. See Home Office statistics (Above).
Kingsbridge, which has a population of about 5,800 is located in the heart of South Devon and yet is only 30 minutes drive from the A38 Expressway which links directly to the M5. Railway stations are situated in Totnes, Plymouth, Newton Abbot and Torquay. National Express coaches depart from Plymouth and Exeter and there are also airports in these two cities. Brittany Ferries operates a ferry link between Plymouth and Roscoff in northern Brittany and Santandar in northern Spain.
